Tom Misner established it in 1976 in Sydney. It provides classes in digital filmmaking, music production, graphic design, game design, 3D animation, and audio engineering.

Tom Misner founded SAE in 1976 in Sydney by transforming a tiny advertising studio into a lecture hall. Campuses were developed in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth during the course of the following six years. Midway through the 1980s, SAE started opening institutions overseas, with campuses in Glasgow, Auckland, London, Munich, Frankfurt, Vienna, and other cities.
